Marine Electronics Advice and Service Along the South Coast

The greatest concentration of leisure marine activity in the UK along the south coast from Poole and Lymington to Southampton and Itchenor is the area of the greatest demand for marine electronics advice and service. The great majority of all today’s marine electronic equipment can be installed by the owner. This is a far cry from just a few years ago when radars had complicated fixed-wave guides connecting the antenna to the receiver, when Loran-A’s were so temperamental they would sometimes not work when the engine was running and in certain weather conditions, and when the quality of the old AM radio communication was so poor most cruisers did not bother to install one. Which Motorcycle Alarm System is Right For You?

With all the competing technologies or so called technologies its hard to determine which is best for your bike protection. Bike thieves now do not need to start your bike to steal it they have been picking them up and putting them in the backs of trucks rendering your motorcycle alarm system useless.

The Lo-Jack motorcycle security system was introduced in 1984 and is based on Loran-C Technology. To function it requires that a police vehicle is equipped with a special radio receiver to track the signal emitted by the Lo-Jack product. Lo-Jack works by emitting and FM based homing signal. A homing receiver indicates the direction only of the homing signal; it cannot determine the precise location. for example the receiver cannot tell if the homing device is 10 feet or a mile away. Lo-Jack is also limited to a few counties in roughly 26 markets nationally. Lo-Jack is also limited to whichever municipality within those markets that have their devices operational on the police vehicles. Continue reading

The Evolution of Navigational Marine Equipment

The sea is a source of many exciting voyages and thrilling adventures. However, it can be very perilous if one travels without the proper marine equipment. The advent of technologically advanced navigational devices makes voyaging by sea both easy and safe.

Sea navigation started more than 4,000 years when Phoenician seafarers sailed using primitive charts and their observation of the night sky to determine their locations and the direction they are heading to. Ancient sea navigations were very difficult and extremely dangerous due to the inaccuracy and unreliability of the tools that mariners use. Continue reading

Does Anyone Still Use GPS Loran?

There are certainly no doubts about the popularity of the GPS device in the present age. But like every other thing this device too has witnessed gradual development and has evolved over a period of time. A reminiscent of the earlier days of the GPS is the GPS Loran. LORAN or Long Range Navigation is a navigation system designed for the land. This navigation system makes use of low frequency radio transmitters. These radio transmitters in turn use multiple transmitters that determine the location and/or speed of the receiver. Continue reading
